We are proud to announce that we have hired two additional journalists through our expanded partnership With Report for America. This national nonprofit helps place reporters in newsrooms to cover beats which don’t get enough coverage.

Our commitment to bringing you news that holds public officials responsible and goes in depth to inform you about the issues most important to you is reflected in these new hires. They also reflect our determination to ensure that the journalism we produce is better reflects San Diego.
Do you see a problem in your area that you would like us to investigate it?
Briseo worked previously for The Modesto Bee as a reporter covering equity and underserved communities. She is a first-generation high school graduate and college graduate. These perspectives will help her report, which will allow her to tap into the challenges students and families face in San Diego Unified School District and expose systemic flaws that could pose challenges to their quality life.
Briseo will investigate the most pressing issues for Latino students, who make up half the students enrolled in the state’s second-largest school districts.
Niebla will join Inewsource After her reporting stint at the Long Beach Post, she was a Report for America corpsmember and covered West Long Beach. Niebla will be writing about infrastructure and local government in San Diego. She will also pursue accountability stories. Shell also runs our Fix this community reporting projectWe would like to hear your thoughts on which infrastructure issues we should examine next to improve your quality-of-life and ensure that your tax dollars are being used wisely.

What does the new hire mean? Inewsource Our staff will include three Report for America Corps members. Camille von Kaenel will be joined by Niebla and Briseo. InewsourceFirst corps member who has been covering San Diego’s backcountry growth and development for nearly two years. Von Kaenels beat now produces investigative reporting on environmental and energy issues.
Already, her reporting shed light on record cash payouts San Diegos power company, San Diego Gas & Electric, distributed to investors just weeks after passing on a surge in the cost of natural gas to customers.
Our rapid growth Inewsource It goes beyond the scope of our Report for America hirings. Recently, Additional investigatorsTo cover the cost of health care and the costs of the Border and immigration. We are uniquely qualified to mentor reporters in Report for America, giving them training both in investigative reporting and broadcast journalism. Our stories air on radio and TV for our partner KPBS. We also distribute our stories to other partners to maximize our reach.
