WASHINGTON (Gray DC), Americans are concerned about rising gas prices due to the President’s decision Tuesday to ban Russian energy imports. One senator from Alaska believes the solution to the rising prices lies right at home.
Sen. Dan Sullivan (R.Ala.) stated that we must be producing that energy from America.
Senator Sullivan stated that the president should take the pledge to stop importing energy from Russia. President Joe Biden claimed that the U.S. would no longer import any energy from Russia. While President Biden claims that nothing is stopping oil companies producing right now, the administration says it is committed towards greener energy and eventually moving away fossil fuels. Sullivan believes that these efforts make America dependent on Russia and other bad actors.
It hurts families, it hurts workers, but it empowers dictators, said Sullivan.
President Biden announced that his administration will tap into millions more barrels from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, despite Russia’s oil being out of the picture and gas being in high demand. Sullivan stated that Alaska should ramp up its production.
Sullivan said that Tap America’s strategic petroleum reserve is Alaska.
Capitol Democrats who are concerned about the environment backed the decision by the administration to tap into reserve funds to help the country weather a price spike. Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.), stated that while the war against Ukraine is important, the battle against climate changes does not have to stop.
We are all trying to wean ourselves off fossil fuels, through conservation or development of renewables, Titus said.
Titus stated that climate change is a constant threat to her desert area.
David Kieve, Environmental Defense Fund, acknowledged the need to provide short-term relief for Americans struggling with high oil prices. But, he believes that the best way for the United States to maintain price stability and avoid international entanglements with oil is to get away from it.
Kieve stated that America will be the leader in a clean energy transition.
In 2021, the United States imported more than 245 million barrels oil and petroleum products from Russia. The previous year, it was 200 million barrels.
