Plastic sandwich bags can be used for school lunches and camping, hiking, or traveling. However, this convenience comes with a high price. These bags are made of crude oil, which is a nonrenewable resource that causes pollution and is not biodegradable.
You can still recycle them after you’re done using them. Nope! You can do more harm than good by putting sandwich bags in your curbside recycle bin. Plastic film is thin plastic that can be thrown in your curbside recycling bin. Recycling machinery for clogsSometimes, they may have to be temporarily closed down. You can return them to grocery shops, but it is better to use bags that are not made of plastic.
I have been usingSandwich bags made of compost instead. These bags are safe to use in your freezer and microwave. These compost bags are 100% plastic-free and can be used to make your own compost. However, it is a good idea to cut off the top.
It’s safe for worm composting. Worms use organic material (such as food scraps) to create rich soil (vermicompost). My mother added some of my sandwich bags into her worm bins. I gave them some of mine. Although they did not like the taste of the bag, the worms are still healthy and can use the bags for vermicomposting.
Compostics sandwich bags measure 7×7 inches, which is slightly larger than most plastic sandwich bags. I found an old box of plastic sandwich bags that were 6 x 5. I think the sandwich bread I use is a bit wider than others. I had to smush it to make sandwiches fit into baggies.
Because my Compostic bags have larger handles, this isn’t an issue. You can also use the snack-sized bags for hiking snacks like nuts and dried fruit.
I will be using more of my sandwich bag and other compostic products as the weather warms up and I go on more outdoor activities and have picnics. I love the fact that my bags take less time to degrade (about 24 weeks for home compost and 12 weeks for commercial compost facilities) and don’t end-up in the ocean. It’s a nice bonus to have bags that are larger.
