Sanwo-Olu urges Lagosians for the preservation of the environment

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoo-Olu has urged Lagosians support the government’s efforts to preserve the environment through the planting of trees.

Sanwo-Olu made this appeal at the kick-off for the 1,000 Tree Planting Project Lagos, tagged The Evergreen Project Lagos. This project was created by Miss Naita Gopta, African Steel Evergreen Project.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment through Lagos State Parks and Gardens, to reducing carbon footprint to preserve the environment and future generations.

He said that the government had been committed since 2008 to tree planting and that over 8 million trees had been planted during the last 13 years.

The governor stated that his administration was committed to preserving the environment for future generations. He said that 60,000 trees had been planted in various locations throughout the state during his tenure.

He also praised the Gupta family’s tree planting initiative and encouraged other residents of the state, to join the effort to plant more trees in the state.

Sanwo-Olu planted a tree at the event.

We can protect the environment we call home and ensure that the future is secure for the youth who are living here today. To save the environment, we should plant more trees.

Gupta spoke earlier to say that her Geography class was a major contributor to her interest in Lagos.

She stated that the tree planting initiative began on December 17th, with the goal of planting 1,000 trees in Lagos by the end of the year.

She said, “I strongly believe a sustainable tomorrow is the only way forward.” ASTEP aims to plant at most 1,000 trees by the end of the year. We want to create a Lagos that is cleaner for future generations. We are determined to return to mother earth what has been taken from her.

Lagos is Nigeria’s commercial capital and the biggest city in Africa. We are proud of this, but we must not forget the pollution levels. It is well-known that trees act as carbon sponges in our atmosphere. We are creating a cleaner, more polluted environment for future generations by reducing the CO2 content and increasing the O2. We are creating Lagos that we can be proud of. This is my goal in the beautiful state that I call home.
