Environment ministry warns that fishermen must remove their ice fishing shelters from this month.
The deadlines for the Highway 16 project are March 15 and 31 south, respectively.
Spring weather can be unpredictable so it is easy to underestimate the time it takes to remove an ice shelter. Shelters that are left on melting ice can be dangerous for boaters, water skiers, and others who use our lakes. In a news release, the ministry stated that debris left behind can also end up on shore, creating litter and potential environmental hazards.”
“Shelters that aren’t removed may result in the owner being prosecuted and the structure and its contents taken away.”
Be careful when traveling on the ice. Slush can indicate that ice has been eroded and fluctuating temperatures can cause pressure ridges and thermal cracks. These are also signs of unsafe ice conditions. The ministry states that ice strength and thickness can vary from one region to the next.
