Abu Dhabi: Residents who engage in environmental-friendly activities will be able to receive a variety of rewards, including discounts at Abu Dhabi venues.
The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) released the Baadr app. It aims to reduce carbon emissions and food waste, encourage energy conservation, recycling, and reuse, and encourage single-use items. The goal is to inspire positive behavior and encourage youth to be more sustainable.
Incentivized activities
The Play Store and iOS currently offer incentives to users who switch to organic foods, eat vegetarian meals for one day or reduce their waste. They can also walk or cycle to their destination, or bring their own cups and containers for ordering at a cafe or restaurant. Even simple activities like recycling paper, choosing stainless steel straws or reusing bamboo papers towels can help users earn points. Users will need to upload photos and details about their behaviours to the app. These include Reuse and Switch, Switch, Grow and Initiate, Conserve and Join, and Move. The incentives will then be available at nine participating vendors in Abu Dhabi.
Positive behaviours to encourage
The app will also be used to increase awareness about the importance environment for the younger generation. The app will be used by youth to share engaging and informative social media posts. It is part of a partnership with EADs outreach schools and universities.
We all have a responsibility to the environment. We may not realize how much our consumption affects the environment. However, we believe that Baadr is a catalyst for positive change in Abu Dhabi regarding caring for the environment. This was Khansa al Blouki, EADs director, environmental outreach.
If we all use the app daily and encourage others to use Baadr frequently, we can make a significant change in our lives and be more mindful about what we consume and how we behave. This can help us create a better Abu Dhabi tomorrow. It has been designed to be fun and easy to use, with lots of exciting incentives for completing tasks. I encourage you all to download the app, and be part in a unique adventure that will not only promote a sustainable way of living but also strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position among the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly cities.
The app was developed in partnership between Borouge, a petrochemical company, and the EADs Sustainable Campus Initiative. EAD spokespeople stated that the future will see a wider range of vendors and incentives.
