New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) NHRC chairperson justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra on Thursday said state human rights bodies may intervene locally in issues such as climate change and environment degradation that pose a threat to people’s right to life.
He said this during a meeting of the ‘Common Programme Committee’ of the National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commissions or SHRCs, the NHRC said in a statement.
Mishra stressed the need to strengthen SHRCs in terms both of manpower and financial resources. She asked SHRCs to address their concerns so that the NHRC could bring the matter up with the concerned state governments.
An SHRC can intervene in a variety of areas that concern human rights. These include issues of environment degradation posing a threat to people’s right to life, the NHRC chief said.
He said that water, soil, and river pollution are important issues for sustainable development.
According to the NHRC chief, the SHRCs could raise such issues and seek out local authorities to take corrective actions to address climate change.
The Common Programme Committee was established at the NHRC-SHRCs’ last meeting on October 13, 2021. It was created with the goal of developing a common action program to work together for the promotion and protection human rights in the country.
Several suggestions were made during the meeting, including the creation a mental health wing within prisons and correctional facilities, the establishment of a human right app by all the commissions that have been established, and boarding HRCNet portal by all SHRCs of the NHRC to reduce duplication of complaints, speed-tracking and process them.
