SNC-Lavalin announces a new solution for decarbonizing the built environment

SNC-Lavalin is a global professional services and project management firm with offices all over the globe. Decarbonomics is a data-driven solution that decarbonizes the built environment at a cost-effective rate and accelerates the global and Middle East region’s journey to net zero.

SNC-Lavalins methods, practices, and tools are used to create high-performing buildings and developments that are interconnected by smart and sustainable systems and infrastructure.

It is being launched because both the public and private sectors are looking for ways to reduce their carbon emissions. The built environment accounts for around 40% of global carbon emission and most buildings that will be in place by 2050 have been built.

“Creating the net-zero communities of the future depends, in part on the effective decarbonization existing assets. DecarbonomicsTM, which is a concrete example how we can help clients reach their net zero targets, is in line to our comprehensive Engineering Net Zero approach,” said Ian L. Edwards.

Edwards stated, “We provide sustainable solutions through connecting people, data, and technology in partnership avec clients such the UK Government Property Agency, delivering carbonization for its 450 building portfolio.”

Decarbonomics combines the expertise and knowledge of the SNC Lavalin Group, which includes Faithful+Gould and Atkins. It covers building services, engineering, asset management and project management.

DecarbonomicsTM, a service that focuses on decarbonizing existing building portfolios, is an end to end service. It uses a simple 3-step approach: benchmarking, road mapping, delivery of a decarbonization plan for an organization.

Benchmark: develop a carbon baseline

Roadmap: design a cost-effective carbon reduction pathway

Deliver: Implement our carbon reduction strategies

Carbon Data Insights is the foundation of this three-step approach. It is a mix of global open source benchmark databases and SNC-Lavalins rich building data library.

The result is a carbon-free estate. This is achieved through the strategy of reducing carbon from behaviour change to building retrofit intervention and measuring progress over the portfolio and asset lifecycle.

“Decarbonomics is based on the principle system thinking and brings together our diverse expertise and knowledge about the built environment and buildings in a manner that makes carbon visible at portfolio level,” said Matthew Tribe, Managing director, Planning, Design and Engineering, Middle East, Atkins, a member the SNC-Lavalin Group.

“This allows our clients in Middle East to make informed choices about their investments in carbonization and accelerating the journey towards net zero,” he stated.

SNC-Lavalin developed Engineering Net Zero globally. This program focuses on helping engineers achieve Net Zero Carbon as fast as possible.

The company announced its vision of engineering a sustainable society in 2021. This vision included targets for Environmental, Social, and Governance goals and commitments to Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2030.
