South East Water’s 25 Year Environment Plan Draft: Have your say

Comment on a PLAN to protect the environment by South East Water is now possible.

The 25-year draft Environment Plan is the first ever to be developed by any water company. It includes contributions from customers, employees, and other environmental organizations.

The plan will outline how the company that supplies drinking water will minimize its impact on the environment it draws water from, as well as how it will improve the environment’s health and resilience to drought, flooding, and rising demand for tapwater.

The company supplies drinking water for 2.2 million customers in south east England. It maintains 83 water treatment facilities and 9,000 miles of underground pipelines. 33 Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Two local nature reserves, Lullington Heath National Nature Reserve, and numerous Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are also available.

The water supplier works with farmers, landowners, and other water users to preserve the quality and quantity the rivers and underground water aquifers that are used to produce an average daily consumption of 520 million litres.

The company is now looking for ways to expand the work of its environmental experts in-house team to collaborate with local companies and individuals to improve our environment within a generation.

Emma Goddard is the head of environment at South East Water. She stated: Although our environment faces ever-increasing risks from climate change and population growth we also know that lasting, positive change takes time. That’s why we took action to create the first 25-year Environment Plan for the water industry.

We also know that the environment is constantly changing and we will review the plan at least once every five years to ensure we are always looking ahead to the next quarter century.

We are a freshwater supply only company and rely on water. Therefore, it is vital that we not only ensure that we don’t have any negative impact on the environment, but also that we increase the environment’s resilience to the effects climate change has on it.

How we will achieve this is described in our draft 25-year Environmental Plan. We are currently seeking public feedback on this document.
