CARTERET COUNTY (N.C.) – Students at East Carolina University provide service during their spring break.
Students in the Alternative Break Experiences Program at East Carolina University volunteered with NC Coastal Federation to bag recycled oyster shells. These shells will then be turned into living shorelines, which will preserve marshes in the region.
They also hiked along the Hoop Pole Creek Nature Trail trail to remove overgrown vegetation and clean up the paths.
Students discussed the importance of being involved in environmental change.
Chelsea Hewett, a student at ECU, stated that alternative breaks are a great way to experience spring break, especially if there are no spring break plans.
It’s a chance to meet new people, learn about their needs, and figure out how you can help them. We then have a lot more fun activities… and I get the chance to help others.
Rachel Bisesi from the NC Coastal Federation applauded those students who came to help.
It says a lot about them that they would volunteer to help during spring break. Bisesi said that spring break is a great time to have fun and go to the beach.
ECUs Alternative Break will also help the NC Coastal Federation to clean up rain gardens in this area, teach environmental education and clean up several other nature trails in Carteret County if the conditions permit.
