He wrote, “The new school will develop fundamental knowledge of Earth and its system, accelerate the development solutions to climate crisis at the scale needed, and educate tomorrow’s change makers and problem solvers in this urgent area.”
The total funding for the initiative includes the Doerrs donation and other contributions is $1.6 billion.
Majumdar was appointed in 2009 as the founding director for the government agency charged with researching energy innovations. He also serves as the chairman of the advisory board for Jennifer Granholm (US Energy Secretary).
“We do not inherit the Earth from those who came before us, but we borrow it from them,” the new dean said. The new dean said that we must create a future where humans and nature can thrive together.
The new school will be focusing on various topics related the climate crisis and its solutions. This includes earth and planetary sciences and energy technology.
Along with current faculty members, the university’s School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences, also known under Stanford Earth, will move to the new school. The release stated that Stanford plans to hire 60 more faculty members in the next 10 years. Early hires will focus on energy, climate science and environmental justice.
The university’s launch comes as California continues to face climate change-fueled disasters such as a drought, ongoing water crisis and weather swings that can alter landscapes.
