GATINEAU, QC, April 26, 2022/CNW/ Today, as the Commissioner for the Environment and Sustainable Development presented five new reports to the Commission, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault (Minister of Environment and Climate Change) and the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson (Minister of Natural Resources) issued the following statement.
“We are pleased with the latest reports of the Commissioner and thank him for his efforts. The findings of Commissioner are evidence that action to protect the environment works. It is time to be more ambitious. This is exactly what the government is willing to do.
“Over the past six years, we made significant progress in everything from putting an end to pollution to protecting historic amounts land and water. Another example of the progress we have made is the recent finding by Commissioner that major departments have succeeded in reducing emissions. We are now taking the next steps, as we have stated in Budget 2022 and Emissions Reduction Plan.
“A price on carbon polluting is one of our best options to protect our air and combat climate change,” said the Commissioner. We are committed to ensuring that the price on pollution is fair and effective. We have strengthened the minimum national standards of carbon pricing that all systems need to meet between 2023-2030 and are now working with territories and provinces to implement them. A price on pollution is not only good for our air quality, but it also helps families make more money. These are the kinds of results that Canadians will continue to deliver.
“The Commissioner noted that the world is shifting more towards clean options. Our government will always be there for workers. We have invested in projects that will create or secure thousands of jobs in the last few months, including biomethanization plants. Quebecto the auto sector OntarioTo the home retrofit industry ManitobaAnd across the country. This progress will be furthered by the 2030 Emissions Reduction plan and Budget 2022.
“In accordance with the Commissioner’s suggestions, the Government will also create a standard framework for how certain measures, such the adoption of hydrogen to reduce emissions, in accordance with the recommendations of the Commissioner.” Canada. Infrastructure Canada is following the recommendations of the Commissioner and strengthening the Climate Lens that assesses the environmental impacts of infrastructure projects to continue building a clean, competitive economy.
