Students at Southern W.Va. HS Shine in National Spotlight on Environmental Work

A recycling program that rewards people for sharing recycling stories is getting national attention at a high school in southern West Virginia.

Wyoming EastThe top honors went to the submission by Friends of the Earth Club. PepsiCoRecycling Innovation Challenge.

The school program awarded the most recycled people with gift cards and prizes. Student-created contests were expanded beyond the high school to include social media accounts on Tik Tok and Facebook. These contests allowed students to challenge their friends and answer recycling trivia questions.

The Recycling Innovation Challenge gave the club advisor $5,000. Next, the students will create selfie stations at recycling bins throughout the county.

Wyoming East students are also representing West Virginia at the national Samsung Solve for TomorrowCompetition After winning state honorsLast year. They will find out Thursday 17 March if the project will go ahead.

Students are working together with leaders to make recycling feasible in the county. They met with county commissioners in December, and Mullens Town Council members in February.

Two of six contests created by students are active on Instagram.
