Sumitomo Chemical receives a Minister of the Environment Award in the Environmentally Sustainable Corporations Section of the Ministry of the Environment’s ESG Finance Awards Japan

Sumitomo Chemical was awarded the Minister of the Environment Award (Silver Award), in the Environmentally Sustainable Corporations category of the third ESG Finance Awards Japan. The awards were organized by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment. This is the first time that the Company has received this award.

ESG Finance Awards Japan was created by the Ministry of the Environment to promote the spread and growth of ESG financing. The Environmentally Sustainable Corporations Section award is designed to recognize companies that have integrated material environment-related risks and opportunities into their corporate strategy in order to increase their corporate value and to have a positive impact on society.

Sumitomo Chemical has been implementing Sumika Sustainable Solutions*1Initiative, a unique in-house certification program launched in 2016, to capitalize on climate actions business opportunities. The Company also pledged support for the TCFD*2Following their publication in June 2017, the Company published its recommendations and has been intensifying efforts to make disclosures using the TCFD framework. The Company also published its grand plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in December 2021. This set out a direction and goals for its initiatives and activities to reduce Sumitomo Chemical Group’s global greenhouse gas emissions. These efforts were recognized with the Sumitomo Chemical Group’s Award.

Sumitomo chemical Group has received strong encouragement by this honor and will continue working together to increase its efforts to solve climate change and other pressing problems facing society. The Group will not stop delivering sustainable growth and meeting the expectations from stakeholders, but it will continue to contribute to the creation of a sustainable world through its business.

*1 An initiative in which Sumitomo Chemical, based on evaluations by outside experts, designates those Group products and technologies that contribute, throughout their lifecycles, to responding to global warming or reducing environment impact, in order to promote their development and spread. Sumika Sustainable Solutions was established in February 2022 with 57 products.

*2 A private sector-led task force established by the Financial Stability Board, an international organization which aims to stabilize the global finance system, at the request of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors. The TCFD encourages companies disclose information regarding climate change.
