The Environment Ministrys Expert Appraisal Commission has recommended the grant of environmental clearance for Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltdsexpansion plan in the Madurantakamtaluk, about 3.7km from the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.

However, the Environmental Clearance will be subject to the National Green Tribunal’s judgment and any orders of any other court, the Expert Appraisal Committee stated.

It imposed certain conditions on the company. The project proponent shall not manufacture banned chemicals. The unit will not use banned raw materials. The project proponent shall adhere to the notifications/guidelines of the government in this regard, it said.

The Expert Appraisal Committee directed the company to explore the possibility that treated water could be recycled and reused in order to reduce freshwater consumption. This was also a commitment by the project proponent.[Sun Pharmaceuticals]Zero Liquid discharge shall be maintained and no treated or untreated wastewater shall ever be released from the premises.

The company presented before the Expert Appraisal Committee the idea that the expansion would be done within the existing land, which is 64,688.76 m2. The project cost would be 202.36 Crore, including an investment of 174.36 Crore, while the company had set aside 1.49 Crore for pollution control measures.

The company stated that it would require 286.5 kilolitres per day (KLD) of water after expansion. This includes 182 KLD of freshwater. According to the company, the effluents will be treated at an existing treatment facility, which is based on the zero liquid emission system.

The Expert Appraisal Committee recommended that hazardous and explosive raw materials or products be stored in accordance with safety norms and best practices.
