Sussan ley doesn’t have duty to protect children, court rules

Environment Minister Sussan Ley.

Ms Leys’ office stated in a statement that the minister was happy with the Federal Courts decision.

According to the statement, the Morrison government is committed to protecting the environment for future generations. The Minister takes her role of Environment Minister very seriously. The judgment will now be closely reviewed by the government.

Anjali Sharma (17), one of the students involved in the matter, stated that the ruling had left them devastated, but it did not stop her fight for climate justice.

This case shows that young people want to be heard at the highest levels on this issue. She said that they were proud to represent young Australians and fight for people in power to be held accountable.

The impacts of climate change are already having a devastating effect on Australians’ lives. Australia was on fire two years ago. Today, it is underwater. Burning coal makes bushfires worse and floods more deadly. Something must change. Our leaders must step up and take action.

Izzy Raj-Seppings (15) said that despite Tuesday’s outcome, the ground was shifting.

All over the world, governments are halting new coal projects and shifting rapidly to renewables. We appeal to the Australian government for the same, she stated.

Student Luca Saunders stated that the judgment caused her pain.

I am currently in a lot devastation. Not only am I worried about my future, but I am also concerned about the future of the 5,000,000 Australian children I represented here. She said she was scared for her family.

I’ve said so many things to so many people and I don’t think I’ve ever been heard. I am not giving up… but I am tired. All Australians are tired.

David Barnden (the principal lawyer at Equity Generation Lawyers) said that they would review the judgement carefully and consider the next steps.

Independent climate change experts have determined that the Whitehavens Vickery coalmine will pose a risk to young Australians’ lives and cause them injury or death. Science has not changed. He said that regardless of today’s decision, adults should do everything they can to ensure a safe future for their children.

We will continue to support young people’s fight for a safe and secure future. We will also carefully consider the decision.

If the group wants to appeal Tuesday’s judgment, they will apply for special leave. If granted, the matter is heard by the full bench at the High Court.
