Canada’s environment minister has stated that the green energy sector in Canada doesn’t receive federal subsidies.

According to reports, Steven Guilbeault (Environment Minister) made the claim in Senate on Thursday. Blacklocks Reporter.

Guilbeault stated that we do not subsidise the production of wind power. We don’t subsidize the production solar energy. While we currently subsidize the production in this country of fossil fuels, we don’t directly subsidize the generation of solar energy. The federal government does not develop energy projects. The federal government doesn’t develop energy projects.

In testimony to the Commons committee on Canada-U.S. Economic relations, Seamus O Regan, then Natural Resources Minister, has shown that cabinet has paid billions of dollars in subsidies.

The federal programs include a $9.2-billion Green Infrastructure Fund and a $2-billion Low Carbon Economy Fund. There are also a $400-million Arctic Energy Fund and $220-million Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities program. There is also a $206-million Climate Action and Awareness Fund and 179-million Energy Innovation Program.

There has yet to be a federal calculation of the cost to taxpayers for direct subsidies for green energy.
