MASSAPEAQUA (NY) Residents who want to help the environment and protect the shoreline are invited at Oyster Bay’s annual Dune Day. It will take place Saturday, March 26th at 10 a.m. at TOBAY Beach. Residents can volunteer to plant dune grass along shoreline.
Joseph Saladino, Town Supervisor, stated that the Dune Stabilization project brings together residents of all ages to preserve and protect our beautiful shoreline. They do this by planting stalks dune grass. “This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity that students, scouts and families, as well as organizations, have to offer.
The Dune Stabilization Project assists in the preservation of the town’s beaches, barrier island, and other natural resources. Volunteers are part of the town’s crews and officials. Residents from all over town also have an interest in saving TOBAY Beach.
The South Shore dunes continue to suffer from environmentally damaging storms that have a major impact on the beach. According to statistics, dune grass can provide a natural shield that can withstand storm surges and high winds.
