Total Waste Management gets Level 3 Environment Permit

Total Waste Management, a local company in the waste and environmental service sector in PNG was recently awarded an Environment Permit Level 3 (EPL-485) by the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority.

This is the first such certificate to be issued to a waste management firm in PNG, and it is also the largest.

TWM was established under a Level 2, (L2) Environment Permit by CEPA.

The company has expanded its core business in waste management, and now provides other integrated technical services such as industrial services and renewables, and skilled manpower (training and placements), all of which have contributed to the development of TWMs (Integrated Waste Management Facility) (IWMF).

L3 environment permits can be applied to areas where the greatest degree of protection and environment are required. Generally, these permits are granted to large corporations within the oil, mining and gas industries.

TWM’s environment permit contains more than 127 conditions. This is reflective of the highest level of scrutiny that CEPA, the regulator for environment protection, will apply to it.

Our business was recently granted an L3 Environment Permit that will allow us to safely construct and operate our Integrated Waste Management Facility, (IWMF), to world-class standards.

Kori Chan (managing director of TWM) said that this is the first of its type in PNG, and for the Pacific islands region.

This environment permit is a reflection of evolving legislation and increased regulatory oversight. It also indicates the growing social expectation that companies operate in a socially, ethically and environmentally responsible manner and is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Michael Wau (Director of CEPA) (Non-Renewable Resource Division Environment Protection Wing) said, “I see the issuance to TWM of the Level 3 Environment Permit” as an enabler for development partners in PNG. They now possess an in-country waste service facility that has the necessary legal approvals for challenging streams.

TWM Group has set the standard as the first to enter the growing waste industry in PNG. CEPA is proud of its partnership in this endeavor.

TWM will be granted the L3 Environmental Permit to build the IWMF Roku (a first-ever such facility in PNG and Pacific Islands region) and to conduct industrial wastewater treatment and quarrying.

It also places TWM among those mining and oil and natural gas majors who have such permits in PNG.
