California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards Presents Family-Owned Napa Winery with Prestigious Sustainability Award

(Napa, Calif.)April 26, 2022Trefethen Family Vineyards is pleased to announce that the California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards have presented the winery with the California Green Medal Environment Award.

The California Green Medal Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards recognize vineyards and wineries that have demonstrated leadership in implementing sustainability principles: economic, social, and environmental. The Environment award winner honors “the vineyard and/or winery that best demonstrates environmental stewardship through maximized environmental benefits from implementing sustainable practices.” This award highlights the transparency of Trefethen’s estate-grown approach to winemaking, the biodiversity and resiliency that the winery has built into its farming, on-site water recycling, solar electricity generation, and the pilot program launched in 2021 to capture CO2 from wine fermentations.

Hailey Trefethen leads Trefethen’s sustainability efforts and commented, “We are thrilled to be the recipients of a 2022 California Green Medal award. When we think of sustainability, we look at what will help us thrive for another three generations and how we can continue to farm the best quality grapes while sustaining our business and our land.”

Sustainability has been a core value since Trefethen’s founding in 1968. Trefethen’s family showed remarkable foresight when they installed a system that would capture and recycle all winery wastewater. Every employee was also provided with healthcare and retirement benefits. Hailey Trefethen and Lorenzo Trefethen are the third generation of Trefethens. They continue their family’s commitment towards sustainability and strive to be at the forefront in new technology and innovation. Trefethen is a member the international group Porto Protocol. This foundation fosters climate solutions in the wine industry and has been a Certified California Sustainable Vineyard & Winery and Napa Green Farming estate.

Trefethen’s years of dedication have resulted in a flourishing ecosystem that is less dependent upon outside resources and more resilient to the changing energy, climate and wine-growing demands. For more information or to learn more about Trefethen’s sustainability efforts, visit their Website.
