U.N. The Environment Assembly adopts a Plastic Pollution Treaty Resolution

The United Nations Environment AssemblyAdopted a resolutionWe call for a legally binding treaty that will combat all levels of plastic pollution.

The assembly was held online in Nairobi, from February 28th to March 3rd 2022. The assembly’s theme wasTo achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we must strengthen our actions for nature.

The meeting reached a consensus on the need to address plastic pollution worldwide. Peru and Rwanda proposed a solution to plastic pollution at all levels of the plastics life cycle. This included extraction, manufacture, use, and disposal. Delegates hope that legally binding treaties will be in place by 2024.

We are witnessing unprecedented global momentum for tackling the problem of plastic pollution, which is a first in human history.

While Erastus OokoThe plastics engagement lead Greenpeace Africa, said:

More than 140 countries support the opening of negotiations for a global plastic treaty. But, this support is not enough. These countries should demand a legally binding treaty to address the plastics crisis.
