The decision of the appellate courts stems from a suit filed by the neighborhood group Save Berkeleys Neighborhoods,The university claims it has not analyzed the impact of its growing student population.
The university stated that by limiting student enrollment to just over 42,000, it would reduce enrollment for next year by approximately a third or at least 3,050 undergraduate seats. This would have devastating consequences for thousands of students who are waiting to be admitted to Berkeley.
Berkeley admits approximately 21,000 students in a typical academic year. It also enrolls approximately 9,500 students. Officials said that Berkeley would have to cancel offers to at most 5,100 potential undergraduate students to reduce its intake by 3,050. This is based upon the school yield rate. In the statement.
The university’s ability and ability to function would be affected by this decision, which could have dire consequences for thousands upon thousands of students. Officials noted that freezing enrollment at this low level would result in the university losing at least $57million in tuition. It would also affect the institution’s ability offer financial aid, to fund student services, and to maintain the 1,230-acre campus.
The University of California appeals the decision to the Supreme Court of the States.
