Uganda: Carrefour, Ministry of Environment Raise Awareness about Importance of Wetlands

Carrefour Uganda has partnered up with the Ministry of Water and Environment in order to celebrate the World Wetlands Day.

Together, they cleaned up Nakayiba swamp in Masaka. There, the government plans on building a wetland capital to encourage conservation and wise utilisation of the wetlands. This will bring about sustainable socio-economic benefit for the local population.

As part of Carrefour’s corporate citizenship efforts, employees from different Carrefour stores in Kampala took part in the clean up.

Carrefour highlights World Wetlands Day to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and encourage other corporations to support projects or enterprises that preserve and conserve these unique ecosystems.

Carrefour is committed to the preservation of our natural ecosystems, and actively contributes to sustainable development in the markets that we serve. We believe that everyone has a responsibility to preserve and protect biodiversity that is vital for the survival of humans, animals, and plants. We are grateful to have partnered up with the Ministry of Water and Environment for a clean-up of Nakayiba Swamp. We hope to make our customers aware of how important it to preserve wetland spaces.” Franck Moreau, regional Director of Carrefour East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said.

World Wetlands Day (February 2, 2019) is celebrated to raise awareness about wetlands as important ecosystems that support biodiversity, climate mitigation, adaptation, freshwater availability, economies, and many other factors.

The day recognizes the positive impact of wetlands on bringing people together for the benefit and nature.

Moreau stated, “Wetlands have a crucial role in our ecosystems as they filter and cleanse water as it flows through. Too much contamination can cause the natural filtering system to fail and even lead to its destruction. This could cause severe damage and increase flooding, water contamination, and a decline or loss of wildlife populations.

The theme for this year’s event was “Wetlands Action for People and Nature.”
