Uganda Refugee Response Program (RRP), 2020-2021 Environment & Energy Dashboard – Quarter 3, January –September 2021 – Uganda

Analysis of the Results

National Forestry Authority had established 300 ha plantations by the end of Quarter 3. This was as per the year for restoration planting for the restoration of degraded Central Forest Reserves. This brings the total hectarage protected by NFA to 771 ha. NFA also raised 1.4 million more assorted tree seedslings to be planted across the operation during season 2. This brings the total number of seedlings produced to 6.43 million for the year. At the end of Q3, 76.7% (4.93million) of these seedlings were ready for planting. 33.7% was distributed in the DRC situation and 66.3% in West Nile.
NFA also established three (3) central tree nurseries, Adjumani nursery near Kyaka II and Kanungu DLG Nursery. Adjumani nursery was fully operational by Q3, Rwensambya had been established, and Kannungu was in process.

Challenges

These included intermittent rains that caused slow uptake of seedlings, logistical challenges in transporting seedlings to beneficiaries living at a greater distance (e.g. Kiryandongo), and insufficient fuel allocations to allow seedling transportations in multiple batches.

Priorities

The Environment sub-sector has prioritized the procurement of planting material (seeds, cuttings) for the remainder of 2021. This will allow them to start planting seedlings for the 2022 planting by NFA, distribute the remaining tree seedlings to the nursery for planting out in season 2 rains, and monitor environmental interventions.
