Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov is on a two-day trip to India and held bilateral talks Thursday with India’s external affairs secretary S Jaishankar.

According to news agency PTI, Jaishankar said that “our meeting today takes place within a difficult international context.” This meeting is the first since Russia invaded Ukraine.

According to PTI, Jaishankar also stated that “We have diversified cooperation by expanding our agenda.” He also said that India has always been open to resolving disputes through diplomacy and dialogue.

Lavrov thanked India for its neutrality over the war, and said that “India is taking the situation in the full effect and not just one-sided.” He also praised India’s ties with Russia, saying, “Our relations were very durable during many difficult times in our past.”

The meeting of the leaders takes place at a time when Russia is trying to isolate itself and the west has been putting pressure on India, urging it to condemn the invasion of its eastern European country. India, which has long-standing diplomatic relations with Moscow has remained neutral and has avoided condemning it on public platforms.

The invasion, which Russia called a “specially military operation” in Ukraine, was launched February 24. It has been making rapid advances since then, with forces now encircling Kyiv.

Lavrov had also visited China, where he met Wang Yi, the country’s foreign minister, before coming to India.
