Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said Sunday that the military operation against Ukraine is exacerbating the global climate crisis.
Guterres made these remarks in a recorded video message sent to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 144th Assembly.
“The war is also aggravating existing economic and social vulnerabilities – well beyond the region,” the UN chief said.
“Meanwhile,” the war also demonstrates how the global addiction fossil fuels is putting energy security and climate action at the mercy geopolitics.
“This further exacerbates climate crisis, already wreaking havoc all over the globe.”
Guterres stated that the world must reduce its emissions by 45 percent in the next decade and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
He also urged that climate finance commitments to developing countries – who bear the brunt of the crisis – should be met.
He also noted that parliaments as well as legislators are essential for achieving these objectives.
The Russian military operation in Ukraine began on February 24th.
The UN reports that approximately ten million people have fled their homes within the Eastern European country as refugees or internally displaced.
