The fifth session, or Fifth Session, of the United Nations Environment Assembly will begin in Nairobi, Kenya, today.
The UN Environment Assembly is the world’s top environmental decision-making body. The United Nations Environment Assembly gathers representatives from 193 UN Member States, companies and civil society every two years.
To achieve sustainable development goals, we need to strengthen actions for natureThis Assembly will be focusing on one theme:
The assembly regards nature as critical to achieving goals of the unanimously agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda aims to end poverty and conflict, create fair and inclusive societies, and protect the planet and its natural resources.
Other important topics at the Assembly include chemical waste management, nitrogen management, nature based solutions and biodiversity, as well as the circular economy. A Leadership Dialogue on the theme of ‘Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals will also be held alongside multilateral environmental accords.
The Assembly will be discussing the creation a negotiating committee international to start work on a global, legally binding, and comprehensive agreement to combat the effects of plastic pollution. Given the global plastic pollution crisis, these high-level, societywide discussions could be the most important global environmental development since 2015’s Paris Climate Agreement.
