The North Carolina men’s basketball team was quickly lost in hostile surroundings such as Littlejohn Coliseum.
After being blown out in front their home crowd in the matchup against Duke last weekend, the Tar Heels displayed similar tendencies on the road to Clemson going down in the early stages, but were able this time to rebound with a narrow victory of 79-77.
North Carolina was able escape an eventful night, despite the loud crowd and constant sound of the whistle. This was largely due to the team’s resilience.
RJ Davis, a sophomore guard, said that the crowd was enthusiastic. Clemson is a great college team, and road games can be difficult. Our main goal was to stay together. I think we showed some grit and fighting towards the end. We executed the plays when they were needed and got stops when needed. We persevered tonight, and I am proud of this team.
The Tar Heels have not always found it friendly to be away from their home this season.
North Carolina was at 4-3 on the Road going into its matchup with Clemson. They also looked to avenge last season’s road loss to Clemson.
The Tar Heels started slow tonight, trailing by 11 points at one point. But, something clicked in half-time and they were able find it even with star forward Armando bacot being in foul trouble.
The team was unable to play without their star, which could have led to disaster for a North Carolina squad that has relied heavily on their big man to provide baskets at the low end. However, they fought through it to stay over.500 and secure their ninth conference win of this season.
Bacot stated that it showed a lot of growth. It was great that we were able to fight and keep going despite me being out and not having much depth at the forward and center positions. I am just glad we got out with a win.
The Tar Heels have had their ups and downs this season, but their resilience and determination should not be underestimated.
After a disappointing 20-point loss to its largest rival, North Carolina would have been able to go back on the road and perform poorly.
Despite all the obstacles, the Tar Heels were capable of rebounding from this loss just as they have done after other bad losses. Head coach Hubert Davis believes that his team deserves more credit because of their consistent resilience.
Davis stated that many people keep bringing up the events against Tennessee, Kentucky and Duke. I wish people would talk more about how this group keeps coming back. I’m proud of them.
After a difficult week in February, when they lost two conference games against Wake Forest and Miami respectively, North Carolina responded by winning four consecutive games before last weekend’s loss against the Blue Devils.
The Tar Heels managed to ignite the start of what they hope will become another one of these streaks on Tuesday. They have two wins in a row at their home so they have a chance of redeeming themselves.
