A historic resolution that recognizes and supports the link between animal welfare, environmental protection, and sustainable development was adopted by all UNEA 5.2 Member States on March 2, 2022.
These ground-breaking achievements were made possible by local animal welfare groups in Africa, in collaboration with global organizations of like mind. The advocacy actions were supported by the Member States and coordinated by Africa Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW), African Union – Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), and the World Federation for Animals (WFA). These organizations collaborated with their partner and member organizations in Africa and Asia, Europe, and the USA.
Seven Member states sponsored the resolution, namely, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. They also called on the Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), to produce a report in close cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization (WHO), World Organization for Animal Health, OIE, and the One-Health High-Level Expert Panel and all other stakeholders on the link between animal welfare, sustainable development, and environment.
The resolution was the first to be presented and adopted at the United Nations Environmental Assembly 5.2. It explicitly addressed animal welfare. The resolution was born out of the courage and foresight of the delegates to the Africa Animal Welfare Conference 2019, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They mandated the conference secretaryariat through a resolution, to reach the member states to sponsor and support a resolution to include Animal Welfare in the global environment agenda.
