The United States pledged $600.8 million over four years to support the eighth replenishment at the Global Environment Facility (GEF-8). This is the largest US GEF-8 pledge. It also supports the Biden Harris Administration’s commitments to address climate change, conserve global carbon sinks, and restore the health of the ocean. The United States joined 28 other countries in pledging $5 billion to support GEF-8. This is nearly 30% more than GEF-7.
The U.S. pledge will protect tropical rainforests, other critical carbon sinks, combat ocean plastics pollution, combat wildlife trafficking, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and reduce harmful transboundary pollutants like PCBs, mercury, and other contaminants that can impact Americans’ health. It is the first of four installments for the U.S. contribution towards GEF-8.
The GEF is the world’s largest dedicated funder of projects and programs to improve our global environment. The United States supported the creation of the GEF in 1991. It has contributed to seven replenishments. The GEF, the world’s largest multilateral source for biodiversity finance, is the only multilateral fund whose mission is to achieve global environmental benefit across a wide range of focal areas. This includes chemicals and waste as well as climate change mitigation, land degradation, deforestation, and land degradation. The GEF Partnership has 184 member governments, 18 implementation agencies, more 500 civil society organizations, international funds and funds, as well as businesses from every sector.
