Veganuary Increases Appetite for Reducing Your Environmental Impact

We must work together and individually to protect the environment against the constant threat from global warming devastation.

To protect the environment from the constant threat posed by global warming, we must work together and individually.

While the United Nations COP26 was over in a flash, thoughts have been lingering on the lack of scrutiny of animal agriculture and its contribution towards climate change.

Agriculture accounts for 30-40% of all greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. It also causes other problems like deforestation (mostly in the UK), poor soil health (from animal manure which can contain harmful microbes), and high water usage.

The single largest contributor to carbon, methane, nitrous oxide is the industry, with animal agriculture being among the biggest.

What can humanity do to mitigate disaster? What can we do as individuals to reduce negative impacts and lower CO2 emissions? You can reduce your carbon footprint by giving up meat, dairy, and eggs.

For the dedicated steak-loving carnivores, the idea of going vegan may not be appealing to you. However, absorbing the fact that a normal-sized steak requires 5,000 litres water will undoubtedly suppress your appetite.

You can choose more sustainable food options in a month and not harm the planet. Try Veganuary and you might be pleasantly surprised.

This annual challenge, which was launched in the UK in 2014 by a group of environmentalists, asks people to go vegan for one month.

Over 500,000 people tried vegan cuisine last year. There were 825 new vegan menu options and products launched. 21% of participants said they participated for climate change or environmental reasons, while 46% took on the challenge to protect animals.

A global study published in Science journal found that meat and dairy only 37% of protein are provided by meat and dairy, despite the fact that they use 83% of farmland and produce 60% of GHGs.

Acre has vegans and we welcome any discussion about their experiences or reasons for banning all animal products.

Harco Leertouwer serves as the Managing director Europe for Acres Amsterdam. He is vegan along with his wife, and two children.

Seven years ago, I decided to become vegan because of ethical, animal welfare, and health reasons. I was a mother to two daughters who were prematurely born. It was a life-threatening situation for them and their mother. I realized how precious and precious life is and wanted to do everything I could to help protect it.

Plant-based foods are richer in nutrients, lower saturated fats, and have more nutritional value than meat.

Being vegan is a great way to help the fight against climate crisis, to eat healthy and protect animal welfare. My children are perfectly fine being vegan. They don’t understand why people eat meat, fish, and dairy.

It is not necessary for a small group to accomplish everything. We need systemic change in order to save the world. This is possible only if the majority of people take small steps. These steps will then drive real change. It is already happening, it cannot be stopped.

Tanith Allen, Director of Infrastructure & Manufacturing, Sustainable Business for Acres London Office, stated: It would seem that I would have been a vegetarian growing up, so it wouldn’t have seemed like a stretch to make the transition to veganism. However, it took me nearly 30 years to make this leap. I was able to make the change because of the increase in options and the huge amount of information available about the environmental impact of the meat industry. It was an instant turnaround. I was immediately energized by the support I received from the community and how much healthier I felt.

Veganism does not mean restricting food choices. It means that you are open to more variety and sharing your passion with others. I feel a responsibility to share my ideas and get excited about vegan-curious people around me.

A vegan diet can be good for your health and it can also help you to reduce your dependence on the animal slaughterhouse industry.

Rebecca Wilson, Acres Operations manager in London, stated: My journey to veganism wasn’t linear. I’m still learning every day. I’ve been vegan for one-year now, after being an occasional vegetarian for seven years.

One of the main reasons I chose to go vegetarian was to challenge myself. I was a big meat-eater at the time and wanted to see if it was possible to go cold turkey. This then evolved over the years into an investigation into how animals are treated in the farm industry, from their beginning to their end and the effects that this has on the environment. After a very cheese-laden Christmas in 2020, I decided to go vegan.

I moved to Brighton last Summer, which opened up new dining options with its abundance of vegan restaurants. It also has a general acceptance of a plant-based life style. It has allowed me to explore new food options, has made me more aware of the environment, and has increased my interest in sustainable living.
