WAUKEGAN, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ComEdThe Waukegan Public SchoolsToday, the WPS celebrated the completion of a five-year, 51-project energy-efficiency effortWPS is expected to save more than $609,000 per year on its overall electricity bills.
The effort is part ComEd Energy Efficiency ProgramSince 2008, the program has saved approximately $6.7 billion for northern Illinois families and businesses. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US Department of Energy) awarded the program the highest recognition. ENERGY STARPartner of the YearSustained Excellence Award.

ComEd is proud to be a part of this huge undertaking with the Waukegan public Schools to improve the environment by increasing lighting in classrooms and halls, gyms, parking lots, and other areas that students, staff, and the community can access.
Since December 2017, WPS has worked with ComEd and authorized energy-efficiency service providers to place energy-efficient lighting fixtures and bulbs. They also installed surge-protected outlets and smart strips, refrigeration and kitchen equipment, as well as fire exit signs, air conditioner components, and other energy saving measures at multiple school sites. WPS was awarded incentives totaling $1.8 million through the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program.
The total energy savings for all 51 projects is more than 6,000,000 kilowatt-hours. This is equivalent to the energy needed to power more 700 ComEd customers homes. These savings can reduce more than 6 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, or nearly 650 cars off the road.
Waukegan Public Schools (also known as Waukegan School District #60) has used incentives from utilities in recent years to increase its energy efficiency. 26 school buildings were converted from fluorescent lighting to LED lighting last year. ComEd-recommended engineers were also employed by the district staff to examine building automation systems and make recommendations to improve efficiency. The most recent project was to install smart power strips, which cut down on electricity consumption from idle computers and printers.
As a district we’re always keen to take advantage opportunities to improve energy-efficiency,” said Kevin Kruckeberg who is director of operations at Waukegan public Schools. We are able to provide better services to our students because our operating costs have been reduced. We are able to use the cost savings to fund overdue maintenance projects and building improvements that will benefit our students and staff.
ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award
ComEd received an ENERGY STAR for the 10th consecutive year.The award for Partner of the Year is the 13th consecutive year that the DOE and EPA have recognized the northern Illinois energy company. The distinguished group of award recipients is part of a distinguished group who have made long-term commitments in order to fight climate change and protect public health through energy efficiency. Sustaining Excellence Awards are presented for partners who have been recognized as ENERGY STAR Partner of Year for at least two consecutive years. They must also have met the criteria to be eligible for recognition.
ComEd’s energy-saving programs helped 460,000 residential and business customers save nearly $189M on their electric bills in 2021.

The ComEd Energy Efficiency Program is funded in accordance with state law and offers a variety of services and incentives to help businesses and families save money and use more energy wisely. The program has helped customers save almost 62 million megawatt-hours (the amount of electricity it takes to power more that 7.1 million ComEd customers’ homes) since 2008. These savings have an equal environmental benefit to removing more then 5 million cars from the roads and planting more that 29 million acres of tree.
