Sydney McMillan began her undergraduate studies as a Spanish major in her first two years, before switching to environmental studies.
She stated that she had a desire to save the giraffes when she started and to work at zoos.
As she progressed in her degree, she became increasingly interested in soil and sustainability. After graduating last spring, she was offered a job at a local sustainable landscaping business.
I was initially interested in lab work and considered working with the EPA. Then, I landed in the design field. Now, I work for a sustainable landscaping firm. McMillan stated that the company is relatively new and will open in the coming year. The landscape industry is not sustainable. It’s an industry that won’t disappear anytime soon. So why not make it more sustainable.
McMillan works closely with clients who are looking to save money on their landscapes and use native plants. These designs can be used to save clients money and also help conserve resources over time, McMillan says.
I am interested in soil science, and how important it is. It’s something that is often overlooked. People tend not to pay attention to soil.
McMillan says that McMillan’s minors in geography and Spanish help her in her work in the landscape industry. Learning another language is essential for any job.
