The Nith Valley EcoBoosters has a new group: the NVEB Youth Advocates.

The group was formed by Lyndsay Dajka (16 years old) and Brooklynn Ellis (18 years old).

Dajka stated that the group’s goal was to increase both the number and quality of climate action projects in schools and the leadership skills and confidence of youth.

“So if a school was to come to us and say, ‘We’re interested in planting trees on our property; we want but we don’t have the money,’ we would say, OK, we have this grant and this grant, and we would help them with applying for the grants,” Dajka says.

On March 9, at 7 p.m., the NVEB Youth Advocates is holding their second virtual info night. Here participants can share their greening achievements and challenges at school, and discuss what projects they are most passionate about. They will also learn about the Youth Advocates, and how they can join.

A news release from the community group notes that youth who participate will gain skills that will help them when applying for work, in making a difference in their community by fighting the climate crisis and will also receive volunteer hours.

“I think there’s a really important piece of fighting the climate crisis in schools because schools are where a lot of learning and a lot of change of mindset can happen,” Dajka says.

“Youth are an important part of this climate movement because it’s our future. So involving the youth is also really important.”
