Wisconsin-based organizers Calling on leaders and policymakersTo focus on protecting the planet by stopping the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, removing Line 5 Pipelines in Wisconsin, and making investments to transition into clean and renewable energy sources. Press release.
Starting March 4, organizers will organize demonstrations throughout Wisconsin every Friday to raise awareness about their cause. These demonstrations will be held every Friday through Earth Day, April 22.
Twenty-two communities, including MadisoN, have indicated that the will be participating in eight weeks of demonstrations. Madison will host demonstrations on Fridays at Library Mall at 5 p.m. Some demonstrations might be held at noon in other communities.
The March Forth to Earth Day demonstrations are coordinated by the Associated Students of Wisconsin, Campus Leaders for Energy Action Change Now and the 350 Art Collective on the University of Wisconsin campus.
One of the movement’s main objectives is to stand in solidarity with the Indigenous-led movement to stop Line 5, according to the press release. “The construction and operation of Enbridge’s Line 5 pose a significant threat to Native food systems, as fisheries and wild rice crops are put at risk for irreversible ecological damage,” Quinn said in an email statement to The Badger Herald.
Quinn claimed Enbridge is endangering Native foods systems by building this pipeline. Quinn also stated that Enbridge is actively participating in the cultural genocide of Indigenous tribes and actively taking part in it. WThese demonstrations may be valuable at a local level but she believes that change must be made at both the state and federal levels.
In additional to protesting Enbridge, the demonstrations are demanding no new expansions of fossil fuel infrastructure as well as calling for policymakers to make “rapid and massive investments” in clean and renewable energy sources.
Some federal government officialsThe current response to the climate crisis is being attempted by many, including the Biden administration. In his Address to the State of the Union, President Joe Biden emphasized his goals of promoting environmental justice and implementing more renewable energy sources — which could cut energy costs for families by an average of $500 per year.

Quinn said that Quinn hopes that the eight-week-long demonstration attracts the attention of policymakers who will hold government officials responsible for these goals.
“To do anything less, would be a flagrant violation of treaties with sovereign nations and a total disregard for safety and wellbeing of future generations,” the press release said.
