Bitcoin mining is now a popular endevour.
To mine Bitcoins, one must have a large number computers that can harness their computing power to solve complex cryptographic puzzles. These machines are very energy-intensive and leave a large carbon footprint.
A coalition of environmental organizations has launched a campaign to change the Bitcoin mining process. This campaign claims that a small change in the method could significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint. Environmental Working Group, Greenpeace USA, as well as other groups that oppose Bitcoin mining facilities, have launched the campaign “Change the Code Not the Climate”.
The ‘Proof Of Work’ is the software code used in Bitcoin mining.
Rival cryptocurrency Ether plans to switch to “proof of stake”, a new system. It is believed that such an upgrade would bring down the energy required to mine Ethereum by 99 per cent.
The campaign, launched by environmental groups, encourages Bitcoin miners to make a similar move and save the environment.
