Environmental protection rules

Trans Mountain has established 10 Environmental Protection Rules (EPRs) to support its environmental goals and promote an environment-conscious culture as part the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. Mountain (PETM). These rules must be adhered to by all Trans Mountain employees, contractors and contractors at any PETM job site. The PETM’s environmental rules programme was based on concepts from the Life Saving Rules Programme. Each rule is data-driven and focuses primarily on preventing significant environmental events. These rules and the programme are the first to promote and address environmental protection in industry.

Environmental protection rules

Waterways and Wetlands – Minimise work in riparian habitats. Ensure that all drainage and sediment control measures, spill prevention and response materials, are in place.

Biosecurity – Clean equipment at designated cleaning locations and maintain standard equipment cleaning records.

Use of water and fish – Avoid periods of restricted fish activity and perform fish rescue, flow and water quality monitoring when necessary.

Heritage resources – Avoid known heritage resources. If something is discovered by chance (eg an archaeological artifact), stop localised work immediately and create a contingency plan.

Spills – Keep equipment in good working order. Use secondary containment and make sure spill kits are stocked.

Air and noise – Do not let equipment idle when not in use. Make sure you have dust suppression and sound control measures in place.

Land and soil – Install and maintain effective drainage, erosion and sediment control measures. Ensure soil is collected, stored, and properly marked.

Trespass – Ensure all construction activities and materials are conducted and maintained within the approved project footprint.

Traditional land use – Conduct pre-construction visits for new work areas and report any on-site observations. For all traditional land uses, implement mitigation measures approved.

Migratory birds – Avoid working during bird migration periods. If work is required, conduct an activity survey and don’t cross nest buffers of migratory birds unless you are authorized to do so.

Every person involved in the project is trained according the rules of environment protection during the PETM’s level 1 environmental training. The programme is also officially launched at each job location to emphasize the importance of the commitment made by communities, regulators, and other stakeholders in environmental protection.

Environmental stewardship and leadership are recognised through Trans Mountain’s environmental protection rules awards (ESRP) programme. The programme offers two levels of prizes: quarterly prizes and one-time prizes. Spot awards recognize individuals and groups that have demonstrated positive environmental practices. Quarterly awards recognize individuals and teams that have shown exceptional effort and compliance in a more sustainable manner. Trans Mountain must take responsibility for protecting the environment. The PEPEPs are intended to do this. A thorough investigation is conducted if it is suspected that an EPR breach has occurred. Any disciplinary action that is justified is taken after the investigation is complete. Trans Mountain is committed protecting the environment and will take every step to ensure that all its commitments are fulfilled.
