HONOLULU–(BUSINESS WIRE)–UBS Wealth Management USA today announced that it will be sponsoring two local events in Hawaii for the Genki Ala Wai ProjectThe Hawaii Exemplary State Foundation has established a non-profit organization called. The organization works in partnership with The Eco Rotary Club of KakaakoTo help introduce bioremediation technology to make the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu (Hawaii) fishable and swimmable in seven years.
The Ala Wai Canal, a man-made canal, is located on the northern boundary to the tourist district Waikiki. It drains into swamps, rivers, streams, and other waterways in central and East Honolulu. It is the most popular inland waterway of Hawaii and is loved by paddlers as well as boaters. However, it is being impacted by urbanization. The canal has been clogged with sludge over the years due to oxygen deficiency. The sludge has caused the canal to become a toxic environment by releasing harmful gases like methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide.
Genki Ala Wai Project uses Genki balls, which are softball-sized mud balls made of clay soil, rice Bran, molasses and water. The Genki balls can be tossed into the Ala Wai Canal and sank to the bottom to absorb the sludge. The positive effects of Genki balls are supported by data from the Hawaii State Department for Health. Colony Forming Units, which indicate the presence of fecal material or water contamination by disease-causing agents, fell by 72% in Ala Wai after students at Jefferson Elementary School began an introductory Genki Balls program on two dates in 2019.
UBS will be the title sponsor for two local events that are being held in conjunction with this project. The first event will be on March 12, and local volunteers will make the Genki balls. The second event will be on April 2, when the community will throw them into the canal.
Although the canal is a peaceful and beautiful place that offers a great escape, it has also become awash with pollutants and trash, which has allowed sludge formation. The Genki Balls can be thrown in the canal to help bacteria-digesting compounds continue restoration of this wonderful place.
