Geneva: The State of Qatar has paid great attention to the preservation of the environment and natural resources for future generations.
This was the message that Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rashid Al Suwaidi made to the Human Rights Council at its 49th Session, during the interactive dialogue between the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment.
Al Suwaidi applauded the report that was prepared by the Special Raporteur on human right and the environment in collaboration with the Special Raporteur on the implications of managing hazardous waste and resources. He also stressed that Qatar shared their views on the need for urgent and immediate measures to combat human rights violations due to environmental pollution, particularly in the most affected areas. The State of Qatar agreed with them on the need to adopt a human-rights-based approach to avoid pollution and ensure a safe, healthy, and sound environment.
He noted that Qatar has established a new ministry to deal with climate change and the environment to ensure a continuous and systematic attention to the issue. This was in addition to the launch of a national strategy to address climate change in Qatar last November and the adoption the Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan. These are all part of the implementation of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
He explained that Qatar has many initiatives and projects that contribute to creating a favorable environment. These include reducing pollution, carbon dioxide emissions, increasing investment, and relying more on renewable energy sources like solar energy.
Al Suwaidi stressed that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 hosted by Qatar will be an environmentally friendly tournament. He pointed out that the venues hosting these finals were designed to reduce energy and water consumption. This will encourage the adoption of sustainable practices at sporting events around the globe in the future.
