Earth Hour 2022 encourages Filipinos to vote for the environment’s future – Manila Bulletin

The Earth Hour 2022 celebration is a reminder of the importance of being decisive in the next national elections. The Philippines must elect leaders who will respond to the dual challenge posed by climate change and biodiversity loss over the next six-years.

The World Wide Fund for Nature-Philippines, (WWF-PH), Shape Our Future: The Countdown Earth Hour 2022 Virtual Roundtable discussion will be held on March 26th at 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will focus on the environmental issues the country’s next leaders should address.

The annual global switch off of lights will be observed in the Philippines between 8:30 and 9:30pm. This unique global grassroots movement will see over 150 countries follow the example of Earth Hour. Every year, millions of people participate in Earth Hour regardless their nationality or religion. This is a true movement for humanity for the environment. Atty. Earth Hour Philippines National Director will lead discussions about climate change and the loss of nature as the defining issues for the country. Angela Consuelo Ibay and panelists include Xia Vigor (WWF-PH Child Ambassador), Mirus Ponon (ASEAN Youth Advocates Founder), Jaybee Garganera (The Green Thumb Coalition Convenor), Mariglo Laririt (Ten Knots Director for Sustainability), and Rodel Cabigal, President of United Ilijan Agricultural Workers for Sustainable Development Rodel Caigal.

The countdown event will be hosted by WWF-PH ambassadors Pia Wurtzbach and Marc Nelson who are both active advocates of nature.“It is high time that we educate ourselves and our fellow Filipinos about environmental issues that we face, especially now that we are about to elect a new set of leaders who will lead us in the next six years,” Wurtzbach said in support of Earth Hour 2022.

“Earth Hour is a step forward towards the goal to collectively act for our environment. We should cast our votes for leaders who will commit to address the worsening environmental issues,” Wurtzbach added.

With the theme “Shape our future,” the environmental movement aims to be a platform to encourage and mobilize collective action for the environment by educating and inspiring everyone, especially government leaders, to act for nature and climate.

Earth Hour 2022 is an opportunity to educate and empower Filipino voters to #ChangeTheEndingForThe Philippines by highlighting biodiversity conservation and climate change issues and raising these issues with candidates for office in the next elections.

The Earth Hour 2022 is a call for action that encourages people to be more compassionate with the planet. It also aims to inspire people to take small steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle and to urge the government and large-scale businesses to contribute to a better, more nature-friendly, and net-zero carbon future.
