New European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change appointed — European Environment Agency

The European Climate Law also includes the establishment of a European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate ChangeComposed of 15 independent senior scientists expertsIt covers a wide range of relevant disciplines.

The Advisory Board will provide independent, scientific advice on EU climate targets and EU measures. It will also advise on their coherence with European Climate Law and EU international commitments under Paris Agreement.

The EEA Management Board appoints the following 15 members alphabetically.):

The Advisory Board will use the best available scientific evidence, including reports from the IPCC as well as other national and international organizations. It will be transparent in its work and make its reports public.

The Advisory Board’s initial tasks will be to elect a chairperson and to plan its work programme. A Secretariat hosted at the European Environment Agency will support the Advisory Board in its work.

Background

The European Climate LawThe Paris Agreement’s June 2021 adopted the binding goal of climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. It provides a framework to achieve progress in pursuit the global adaptation goal set out in the Paris Agreement.

The European Climate Law also includes provisions for the creation of a European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change to support the achievement these goals. An amendment to the founding regulation of EEA creates the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change.

The members of the advisory board are appointed in an individual capacity for a term that lasts four years and can be renewed once. They will be independent of the EU institutions and Member States. Two members of the Advisory Board cannot hold the nationality from the same Member State.
