CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Yesterday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved a reconstruction plan for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. It is a gas pipeline that was canceled after years of effort by SELC and other allies. The announcement was followed by SELC Senior Attorney Greg BuppertThe following statement was released:
The Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP), was a risky, unnecessary project that showed just how stupid FERC was in its regulation of gas industry. Even though the project was canceled we are disappointed that FERC has not given closure to communities with a clear plan to remove the zombie rights-of-way easements of private property.
Residents of North Carolina and Virginia were relieved from the burden of having to pay for a pipeline that they didn’t use. But ACP isn’t the only threat. We may end up paying for other gas projects in twenty years. This includes the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) which is years behind schedule but billions over budget.
Even though stable, domestic renewables like solar and wind are becoming cheaper each year, the cost of so-called natural Gas projects like MVP will continue climbing. It is irresponsible to invest in an old fossil fuel. We will continue fighting other unnecessary and risky gas projects in our region to ensure that we all have clean energy in the future.
