INOLASA: 15 years of innovation to protect the environment

INOLASA is a company that produces vegetable oils, soy lecithin, and flours for animal consumption. In 2007, INOLASA began a transformation process to reduce its carbon footprint. This process involved reducing the use bunker fuel in its production process.

The company was emitted between 55,000 to 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. This was a serious problem that led to the company choosing to invent a boiler that uses a more sustainable fuel. Petra discovered INOLASA. It is a boiler that uses biomass to heat water. Thanks to it, the company was able to reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 tons.

It was a remarkable achievement, but it was not enough for INOLASA. Petra needed maintenance. When the boiler broke down, the company had no choice but to use bunker fuel boilers. So, in 2018 the company acquired another boiler that works with biomass, “ZZ”, which together with Petra made it possible for INOLASA’s CO2 emissions to be reduced to 6,015 tons that year, representing 20 percent less emissions that the company had in 2017.

INOLASA established its C-Neutral Committee. It reported that INOLASA had emitted 4,243 tons of CO2 by 2020. The committee’s objective is to continue to implement good operating practices that help the company reduce its carbon footprint.

This committee developed a carbon neutrality consultation program, which allows you to measure the CO2 inventory in real-time and take immediate action before any changes. The company was awarded the Neutral Carbon Certification in 2018 because of all these efforts.

For the future, INOLASA’s C-Neutral Committee is already working on an electrical cogeneration project with the use of biomass, which would allow them to generate 30 to 35 percent of the energy required in one year. They also analyze loads to eliminate the need for LPG gas or electrical equipment.

With 15 years of innovation, INOLASA also makes its contribution to Costa Rica’s carbon neutrality goals since the remaining CO2 emissions it has are paid for environmental services.

INOLASA is responsible, not only for producing the most efficient and modern soybean processing plant in Latin America but also for protecting the environment.
