Market Drayton Climate Action has been in contact to the heads and chair of governors at the four schools in Market Drayton in an effort to push them to include climate education in their curriculum.
The group also reached out to the chief executive officer, chair of the board and trustees of the multi-academy trusts that operate in the area.
It comes as the group is supporting Teach the Future– a youth-led campaign to bring both urgency and conviction to Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi’s pledge at Cop 26 “to put climate change at the heart of education”.
The newly formed climate action group has supported three key demands of Teach the Future. It hopes that school officials in Market Drayton will implement them.
A spokesperson for the group stated that they hoped that all those who are responsible for teaching and running schools will take seriously the issues we raised.
“We are eager to hear from them in due time about the climate emergency that their students and their classmates face, and will be happy to support their efforts.”
The following are the three main demands of Teach the Future, as supported by the group:

Students and pupils are taught about the environmental crisis and the climate emergency.

These vocational courses help to develop the workforce required to reach our carbon zero ambitions

These education buildings have been retrofitted to produce zero carbon energy.
The Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy for Education by the Department for Education is due for publication in a month. The community group said that this will be a positive step in the right direction.
The group proposes making changes in schools to give a senior teacher and lead teacher responsibility and ensure that climate education and sustainability are covered in sufficient depth in all subject areas.
It encouraged schools to offer opportunities for all pupils in carbon-reduction activities at school, provide continuing professional education on climate and nature education to staff, and to make significant carbon emissions reductions at school. Schools are now working towards zero carbon energy use by 2030.
Although they acknowledge that funding is required for some of these changes, the group has urged school officials not to relent due to the urgent climate emergency.
