McDonald’s Australia is looking to create a healthy and competitive environment for players.

MELBOURNEAndrew McDonald, New Australia’s head coach for men’s cricket, stated that coaches are hired to create a healthy and competitive environment and that he wants to give players the best chance to grow and prosper.

McDonald’s, who was briefly the interim coach for the Australian men’s cricket team when Justin Langer resigned, was given a four-year contract from Cricket Australia (CA). The 40-year old former Test player stated that he would like to have assistant coaches in his team to take on white-ball assignments.

According to reports Langer’s position was in jeopardy after players and staff complained about his “volatile micromanagement style”. It was reported that CA only offered him a six month contract renewal. Langer, 51, rejected the offer and decided to resign.

McDonald’s emerged as the top choice for several current players, including Aaron Finch, white-ball skipper.

McDonald’s told sen.com.au he was willing to step back if players or assistant coaches had better understanding of a particular area of the game.

“To give players maximum opportunity to grow and to learn in your environment, i think that’s why a coach is there to help the players prepare, give the best options and watch them grow as players,” said McDonald’s on SEN 1170 The Run home.

“I think that’s how success looks like. Are you going to get it right every single time?” It’s possible, but it is possible. All I want people talk about is how they improved in the environments created.

“There will be occasions when assistant coaches will take the lead in certain white ball tours. This is definitely in the future. You’re developing your coaches; you’re giving them challenges and opportunities to lead. This will help them feel more confident and ready to take on new challenges.

“It’s all about improving everyone along this journey.”

After a month-long tour of Pakistan, McDonald’s will be returning to Australia in June for a multiformat series.
