In collaboration with Call2Recycle, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment releases EV Battery Transportation Regulation Guide

WASHINGTON, May 5, 2022/PRNewswire/ – Today, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP), announced the publication of a new guidance guide, “Regulations Governing Shipment of Electric Vehicles (EV) Batteries In the U.S.” in collaboration With Call2Recycle, a North American leader for battery recycling and collection.

The guidance document was developed through a collaboration within the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment’s Responsible Battery Work Group (SP). This group comprises automotive original equipment makers (OEMs) like Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Honda Development & Manufacturing of America LLC (HDMA), Stellantis and Toyota Motor North America.

The guidance document identifies current U.S. EV battery transportation regulations by chemistry (lithium-ion vs. nickel-metal hydride), by state of health (end-of-life vs. damaged-defective-recalled), and by mode of transportation (land / rail, air, or sea), and then links those regulations to types of shipping containers permitted for use.

It is intended to be an educational resource that highlights some of the important regulations and current requirements that all stakeholders who will be handling an EV batteries at the end its useful life need to understand and follow. This document is intended for educational purposes only. Every company that handles EV batteries must comply with all applicable laws.

“Call2Recycle has been a leader since the early 1990s in safe and responsible battery handling and transportation. Eric FredericksonCall2Recycle’s Managing Director of Operations.

“As we expand our work in EV battery space, we have seen stakeholders use different interpretations of regulations. Unfortunately, few resources are available to explain the complexity of this topic in an accessible way. This effort was to collect and share the collective experience from a diverse group of EV battery subject matter experts in order to educate others about these complex, but crucial, regulations.

Our member companies have a top priority in promoting best practices in responsible management of electric vehicle battery. As more EVs reach the end of their useful life, we believe it important to promote best practices in the safe and efficient collection storage and transportation of EVs for remanufacturing or repurposing. This document is intended as a guide for auto dismantlers, recyclers and repurposers as well as other stakeholders who are looking for more information on current EV batteries transportation requirements.” Kellen MahoneyDirector, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment.
