Environment Canada expects snow in Whitehorse to give way to arctic air
Skies will clear and the mercury will drop later this week.
A surge of arctic weather is expected to drive off the heavy snow and warm weather Whitehorse is currently experiencing.
It was -10C in Yukon capital at 11 a.m. Dec. 21 and a storm is currently dumping heavy, wet snow. Brian Proctor, an Environment Canada meteorologist said Whitehorse could see as much as 20cm of snow before the storm moves forward and turns into flurries today.
Environment Canada says the storm is caused in part by low-pressure air moving southeast from the northern Alaksan panhandle. Heavy snow will be affecting large parts of southwestern Yukon, northwestern British Columbia.
Proctor stated that Whitehorse might experience some overnight snow flurries, but that arctic air will return to the area and temperatures will drop sharply by Wednesday. He predicted that the cold weather ahead will be mild with temperatures around -27C and lows between -30C- -35C. He predicted a strong northerly breeze.
