Every year, several young filmmakers from across America are selected to create short documentaries to promote environmental awareness in Alabama. Although previous fellows of The Southern Exposure FilmsThey have diverse environmental interests. Their films capture Alabama’s beauty and inspire care for its natural resources.
Film festivals across the country have selected works from fellows from previous years. These are past films Heal the River Paulina Sobczak, a Polish filmmaker, directed the film about the struggle of residents downstream to the Harris Dam on Tallapoosa River for better river health and dam operations. Heal The River The Florida Environmental Film Festival selected this film for screening.
The Last Hike Celine Francois, an internationally recognized GSA BAFTA Student Awards shortlister, tells the story about Nimblewill Nomad (83 years old), who is the oldest person to hike the Appalachian Trail. Nimblewill finishes his over 50,000-miles of hiking by finishing his hike at Flagg Mountain in Alabama. The Last HikeAmong others, it was selected to screen at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival and the Colorado Environmental Film Festival.
Claire Haughey, codirector of The Other Fellows, is another past fellow. Renga for West And Below the Flood director, Sarah Franke.
Select fellows can help local communities raise awareness about pressing environmental concerns. They also gain a variety of valuable experience, including:
- Exploring Alabamas natural resources
- Establishing relationships with the Southern Exposure sponsor, Alabama Rivers Alliance and their partner organizations
- Get critique from the Alabama River Alliance, and other filmmakers
- Clients can help you improve your presentation skills.

I had the opportunity to explore Alabama’s natural landscapes. The mentorship and peer-critique process in a diverse group was a great experience. It also provided me with the networking opportunities and the opportunity to meet peers whose friendships I truly value.
The applicants are required to send a cover letter and resume along with an optional letter or recommendation. They also need an academic transcript (fellows must be graduates of 2 film production courses). This information must be submitted by March 31, 2022. The Alabama River Alliance website is linked. Here. Mid-April 2022 will see the notification of selected fellows. Southern Exposure provides housing and a weekly allowance for the duration of the summer fellowship.
