According to an Army Secretary, the moment is the’most dangerous security environment’ for 25 years

Army secretary says now is 'most dangerous security environment' in 25 years

Christine Wormuth, Secretary of the United States Army, stated Wednesday that Russia’s war on Ukraine and the danger of conflict escalating make the moment the most dangerous in over two decades.

Wormuth spoke at The Hills Future of Defense Summit, stating that this is the most dangerous security environment he has ever worked in over 25 years of national security work.

She said that there is plenty to keep you awake at nights.

Steve Clemons (The Hills editor-at-large) and the event moderator asked Wormuth questions about. Observations She said earlier this month, that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will get worse before it gets better. It seems like the Russians may resort to some potentially violent tactics.

Clemons also mentioned fears that the conflict could spillover into Poland or another NATO ally within the region, which could trigger a collective response of the security alliance.

Wormuth said that while I agree with the idea of planning and preparation for such possibilities, Wormuth added that the Army has always planned for operations in a nuclear, chemical, or biological warfare terrain, no matter how terrible it is to consider.

Wormuth stated that this is why so much emphasis is being put on NATO territory defense and putting forward a very strong deterrent position.

Kathleen Hicks, Deputy Secretary of Defense, was another speaker at Wednesday’s event. She stressed the U.S. commitment to Article 5, the NATO agreement that any attack on one member will trigger a response from all.

Hicks stated, “We want to make it crystal clear that our commitments to Article 5 and to protecting every inch of NATO territory are iron-clad.”

Raytheon Missiles and Defense sponsored Wednesday’s event.
