In the Feb. 20 edition of the Morning Sentinel, Maine snowmobilers describe being at the “Mother Nature’s mercy,” who is not giving us enough snow for outdoor recreation. Maine was where I grew up. I can still recall the winters of snow drifts 10 feet high, skiing, sledding and snowmobiling, as well as building snow forts or snow sculptures. I don’t recall ice covering roads and driveways or the winter landscape.

If we would like to keep some of the snow that we enjoy for winter sports, let’s do what we can to mitigate the carbon emissions that are causing us to have ice instead of snow in Central Maine.

The changes we are witnessing are caused by human activity. We have the ability to change these trends. Supporting a national carbon tax and dividend policy is one of the best ways to slow climate change. This will reduce emissions quickly, help low- and middle-income people financially, and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Citizens Climate Lobby is a national non-profit organization whose goal it is to pass effective climate legislation, such as the carbon fee and dividend. We are making great progress. You can help. Go to citizenscliamtelobby.org where you can join one of ten Maine Chapters. Help keep our snow and avoid the negative consequences of climate change — for us and our grandchildren.
